How does solar energy work?

Radiant light and heat from the Sun is a potent source of power that is harnessed by solar panels and converted into electricity. Long story short, Solar panels convert sunlight into direct current (DC). A solar panel inverter is required to change DC to alternating current (AC), which is used to power your electrical appliances/systems.

Solar Installations can reduce energy bills

Excess power generated by solar panels can be exported from some properties into the power grid. The customer may also receive a credit for this energy from their retailer. This exported energy can be used to offset electricity that needs to be bought from the grid, eg. where there are prolonged low-light conditions.

Receive STCs & reduce greenhouse gas emissions by getting solar installed

The Renewable Energy Target (RET) is an incentive that can help make solar even more attractive to both residential and commercial customers.

Under the scheme, which runs until 2030, households and businesses with solar power up to 100kW may be eligible for STCs (Small Scale Technology Certificates) for every solar panel installed. This can help cut the cost of your solar installation. Get in touch with us to find how much you can save.

How We Get Solar Working For You

Consultation Request

Our goal is to marry the solution to your needs. In our product selection, we consider and review industry feedback on factors, such as product fail rate etc. We are across government incentives and guide our customers to the best outcome.

Installation Phase

Following site inspection and seeking pre-approval from the energy distributor, installation will flow in a prompt yet safe fashion. This includes rails, panels, attaching inverter to wall, connecting cabling and switching on — for a full turn-key solution. A particular focus is placed on aesthetics.

Continued Support

Monitoring tools are included to confirm system health and we also offer an additional analytics tool to help you realise ROI. We provide complimentary maintenance during your first year after install. At any time, you can contact our team to organise additional ad-hoc electrical services.

Your solar panels questions, answered.

What size solar system should I get?

This will depend on a variety of factors, including your roof type, space, regulatory restrictions, potential for shading and how much electricity you use on average. When you supply us with some relevant information, the team at Cardinal Solar can help determine the best system size for your specific situation. This includes figuring out sizing to accommodate forecasted needs, in order to cover you far into the future.

Will solar increase my property value?

It’s been shown that residential properties with solar energy systems sell for more than those without. It’s widely recognised that solar panels are a great property investment. In fact, they are usually more lucrative than your typical kitchen reno!

Is my roof suitable for solar panels?

The ideal type roof for solar panel installation is north, east or west facing with little to no shade. Keep in mind, there should also be enough space for installing a system of the size you require. However, at Cardinal Solar we can often figure out something, should you not have the most suitable roof type available.

What are STCs and how are they calculated?

In Queensland, your solar panel rebate comes in the form of Small-scale Technology Certificates, otherwise referred to as STCs. These are financial incentives that vary according to factors such as the size of your solar panel system and your location.

STCs are calculated using the following equation: Panels x Wattage X Zone/100 = STCs.

The number of STCs you can typically expect to get back from your solar system is dependant on certain factors:
1. Total size of your system
Number of panels x wattage of each panel.
2. Rating of the solar zone in your location
Australia is divided into four solar zones, with Zone 1, 2 and 3 primarily accounting for Queensland.

Rating of the solar zone in your location

Zone 1 Rating: 1.622
Zone 2 Rating: 1.536
Zone 3 Rating: 1.382
Zone 4 Rating: 1.185

You can also find out your own expected STCs using the gov calculator .

How much ‘solar rebate’ will I get?

Although a lot of people are looking for a ‘solar rebate’, STCs are used in QLD and they aren’t technically a rebate (although they do work to get money back/get a discount). In fact, STCs are not unlike shares in that they have a trading value. Naturally, this will fluctuate a bit according to the effects of supply and demand.
